DISEASES affecting the small intestine are relatively common in the dog and cat and surgical management of these disorders is frequently indicated. This article deals with the principles relating to small intestinal surgery and the preoperative management of the patient. Knowledge of the regional anatomy of the small intestine guides appropriate exploration and assessment of these conditions. An understanding of the normal healing process and how it is altered in disease states allows the rational selection of the most appropriate surgical technique for the management of these conditions. An article in the next issue will describe the relevant surgical techniques.
