RECORDS play an important part in monitoring the incidence and severity of disease ‐ and mastitis is no exception. In fact, mastitis is one of the diseases where detailed analysis of the data can be used to help in control. Such analysis can prove invaluable when investigating herd problems due to a high incidence of clinical mastitis or a high somatic cell count. This article describes how to make the most of information which, in many cases, will already be available on the farm. Some worked examples and self‐assessment questions are provided.
