CURRENTLY over 25 per cent of the UK sow population is kept outdoors, compared to around 4 per cent in the early 1980s. The health of outdoor pigs tends to be better than that of their indoor counterparts. Nevertheless, there are a number of problems and diseases that commonly affect the outdoor breeding herd and these are considered in this article.
