THE traditionally held view that examination of the teeth provides an accurate estimation of age has recently been brought into question and it is important that the horse‐owning public becomes aware that dental criteria can, at best, provide an 'informed guess' of an individual's age. However, despite the inaccuracies of the process, there is no excuse for careless examination of the teeth, and it is advisable that a written record is made of the findings on which age estimation is founded.
