ORF is widespread within the national flock and a cause of major welfare and economic losses. It affects sheep of all ages, manifesting in a variety of forms according to the age group. The ever increasing movement of sheep over the past decade seems to have resulted in an increased prevalence of this condition. Other contributing factors have included a deterioration in pasture management, resulting in greater thistle populations, and the increase in acreage in set‐aside land.
