THE first experience most practices would have had of the need to make formal risk assessments came with the introduction of the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (CDSHH) Regulations 1988. These have since been revised and extended as COSHH 1994. New regulations which came into force in 1992 applied the COSHH principles to all aspects of the work of all enterprises. However, what is risk assessment? Why is it necessary? How are risk assessments made and what risk have to be assessed? This article sets out to provide some answers.
