VETERINARY practitioners can be greatly assisted in their knowledge of mastitis by the laboratory examination of aseptically taken milk samples. The pathogens, the scale of the problem and the success of the prescribed therapy can be assessed using simple laboratory techniques. It is essential, however, that certain principles are adopted and followed consistently. This article covers the basic techniques for sampling and culturing and the simple identification of the principal mastitis milk pathogens, while advising on the methods and interpretation of the results.
