The abdominal incision is closed in three layers comprising simple interrupted sutures of 1 (4 metric) vicryl in the linea alba, a continuous suture of O(3 * 5 metric) vicryl in the subcutaneous tissue and a continuous suture of 4 Supramid in the skin. When chronic umbilical infection is accompanied by a sizeable C0I hernia, repair of the hernia should be postponed until the cord infection has been completely overcome. In these cases a similar but slightly modified technique of excising the infected tissue is adopted. The abdominal incision is commenced 2 to 3 cm behind the umbilicus and extended caudally. The abnormal
