Background: Out in the field, it can be particularly challenging to work up a case of the itchy horse. The history can be vague, the patient is large with a dense coat, and the microscope is located back at the practice. Management can also cause frustration for both the clinician and the client, with tasks that may be manageable for dogs and cats proving impractical in ponies and horses. Aim of the article: This article outlines some of the common causes of pruritus in horses, how to get an accurate diagnosis, and how to treat them effectively.
