Abdominal pathologies in equids are a source of major concern for both owners and veterinary practitioners. When a foal is involved, the situation is more complex because rectal examination is not possible. Abdominal ultrasonography can assist the diagnosis of a wide variety of abdominal disorders from uroperitoneum to colic. This article describes the normal ultrasonographic appearance of structures within the abdominal cavity and some of the pathologies that may arise.
