Surgical decision making is a very complex and challenging area of veterinary medicine and this is compounded in farm animal practice by economical constraints. This article discusses some of the conscious and unconscious challenges we have for optimal surgical decision making and considers how we should critique the literature to aid our decision making and improve what we do. Some examples of decision‐making scenarios to help drive individuals' thoughts for their own large animal surgical situations will also be provided.
