Postmortem examinations (PMEs) of cattle and sheep can provide useful information in the investigation of disease outbreaks on farms. The findings should be interpreted in light of information gathered from the case history and clinical examination of live affected animals in the herd or flock. PMEs can provide a definitive diagnosis or simply rule out a suspected condition. This article discusses some of the key disease features and problems that may be encountered by the practitioner carrying out a PME on these species, and provides guidance on appropriate sample selection.
