Both flexible and rigid endoscopes are widely available in small animal veterinary practice and can be used to perform a variety of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Choosing an endoscope can appear a challenge; how do you know which endoscope is best when you haven't ever purchased or used one before? Cleaning and caring for an endoscope can also be daunting and, if performed incorrectly, can limit the working life of the endoscope and cause expensive or irreparable damage. The aim of this article is to introduce the reader to the various types of endoscope available, to advise on the most appropriate endoscope for various clinical procedures and to provide guidelines on maintenance of endoscopy equipment, which will ensure it remains in good working order.
