Animal hoarding can be considered to be the pathological keeping of large numbers of animals without recognising an inability to care for them. The consequences can be devastating for both animals and humans. It is thought that animal hoarding happens in most communities and so veterinarians are likely to come into contact with this behaviour at some point during their career. This article highlights the characteristics of animal hoarding and gives advice of what to do in situations of concern.
