Left displaced abomasum remains an important disease in dairy cows during the early postpartum period. The condition is multifactorial in nature, so it is important to carry out a thorough clinical examination and consider the influence of concurrent disease on management. This article outlines the clinical findings that aid diagnosis, and describes the treatment options available and the relative merits of each. In addition, it reviews the potential risk factors that might be involved and highlights some predictive indicators cited in the literature that may find practical application in the future.
