An article in the September issue of In Practice (volume 33, pp 374–378) reviewed the normal physiology and healing of the gastrointestinal tract in small animals after undergoing surgery, and discussed the options for providing analgesia and intravenous fluid support in these patients. This article discusses the nutritional requirements and use of antibiotics in animals recovering from gastrointestinal surgery, and explains how to monitor for and diagnose the most common postoperative complications to maximise the chances of a successful outcome.
