Infectious disease threatens all dairy herds, irrespective of their size or location. The risks of disease entering a herd are high, particularly with the evolution of modern dairy husbandry systems and industry structures that increase animal movements and other specific risks of disease transmission. Identifying risks and hazards, analysing their impact and applying controls to those that are significant should become an integral and practical part of any herd health plan. This article highlights the importance of including biosecurity within a comprehensive disease management programme to control infectious disease in any dairy herd effectively and efficiently.
