A PREBREEDING examination of a stallion can range from simply performing basic health tests at the start of the season to conducting a more detailed examination for insurance purposes, breed society stallion licensing or before purchase. This two‐part article discusses the key elements of a clinical protocol for the breeding soundness examination of a stallion before it is used for breeding and involves all aspects of potential fertility, including an assessment of the reproductive organs, libido, mating ability, infectious disease status and semen quality. Part 1 outlines how to carry out a physical examination of a stallion, while Part 2, to be published in the February issue of In Practice , will describe the procedure for the collection and evaluation of semen.
