The abundance of freshwater unioid mussels exhibited more diverse patterns of inorganic nitrogen flow and bacterial communities than the areas without mussels. This study demonstrates the effect of mussels on different freshwater ecosystem processes with variable organismal densities and biogeochemical factors.
