We have cloned anEnterococcus faecalis gene cluster,cydABCD , which when expressed inBacillus subtilis results in a functional cytochromebd terminal oxidase. Our results indicate thatE. faecalis V583 cells have the capacity of aerobic respiration when grown in the presence of heme.
