Cell lysis can be induced inEscherichia coli by the combined use of the β-lactam antibiotics nocardicin A and mecillinam. Apparently, the induction of cell lysis occurs by a sequential mechanism in which mecillinam acts first, and nocardicin A has a triggering action insensitive to the inhibition of protein synthesis.
