MRI‐guided focused ultrasound can concentrate mechanical energy deep in the brain noninvasively. This externally applied pressure wave can be used to thermally coagulate brain tumors or other structure for the treatment of disorders. In addition the focal energy can be used to disrupt Blood‐Brain barrier such that local delivery of therapeutic agents is possible. The basic principles and the current clinical and animal studies of this promising method will be reviewed and the future potential discussed.
