Purpose : To determine if survey meter verification of Rapid Strand I‐125 activity is suitable for pre‐implant source strength in the Operating Room. Material and Methods : Residual seeds from previous brachytherapy procedures were tested by placing the unshielded rod in the sterile plastic shell of the Rapid Strand packaging which was affixed to a Victoreen 450B survey meter with double stick tape. The readings obtained were compared with the average activity determined by individual calibration of each seed with a HDR 1000 plus ionization chamber. Results : The verification of activity using the survey meter was easily accomplished in the O.R. without difficulty or compromise of source sterility. In most cases the agreement with expected results was much better than 3%. Conclusion : Simple methods of verification of Rapid Strand strength may be accomplished with existing equipment.
