A method of catheterization enabling samples of portal venous blood to be obtained from conscious sheep is described and has been used successfully on eight sheep for an average period of 83 days (range 43–161 days). A technique is presented for sampling the hepatic venous blood of fully conscious sheep over prolonged periods following permanent constriction of the posterior vena cava.
