Intravenous administration of 50 ml./kg. of water to pregnant rats resulted significant increase in water content of the maternal blood and muscle. This was accompanied by a significant rise in fœtal hæmatocrit values. There was change in the water content of the total fœtus, or amniotic sac, amniotic fluid and placenta. Increasing the amount of injected water to 75‐100 ml./kg. resulted in an increase in water content of the total fœtus and placenta with amniotic sac. Administration of 50 ml./kg. of isotonic saline to pregnant rats did not affect the water content of the fœtus, amnion or placenta.
