The changes in plasma iron concentration and total iron binding capacity (T.I.B.C.) were studied in the rabbit during hæmolytic and hæmorrhagic anæmia and during cobalt polycythæmia and in the rat during cobalt and transfusional polycythæmia. Those conditions associated with an increase in the rate of erythropoiesis (hæmolytic and hæmorrhagic anæmia, cobalt polycythæmia) were accompanied by an increase in T.I.B.C. while transfusional polycythæmia, where erythropoiesis is decreased was accompanied by a decrease in T.I.B.C. The results are discussed with reference to the factors regulating the plasma T.I.B.C. level in the rat and rabbit.
