1. There was no increase but probably a small decrease in the basal oxygen consumption of rats during the first three days after whole body X‐irradiation with doses of 300 r. to 1000 r. 2. The basal oxygen consumption began to increase on the fourth day after 800 r. and reached a maximum of 25‐35 per cent above the control value. These animals died between the sixth to fourteenth days after irradiation. A similar but much smaller increase was seen after a sublethal dose of 600 r.
