1. The work of Heaton on a factor present in malt extracts which inhibits the growth of connective tissue is confirmed. 2. The action of the factor on explants of heart, spleen, buffy coat, periosteum, perichondrium, Jensen Rat Sarcoma, etc., indicates that it extends to all mesenchyme derivatives. 3. It is shown to be a constituent of normal diet; and its dietic status is discussed. 4. A survey of its manner of action on explanted tissues is reported, and a method of assay described. 5. The factor is shown to have no demonstrable direct effect on the growth of epithelia. 6. The meaning to be attached to the term “growth‐inhibition” is discussed.
