1. In the intact anæsthetised or unanæsthetised cat or rabbit it is possible, by suitable methods, to estimate the refractory period and the time of full recovery of conduction (full recovery time) and the premature response interval of the ventricular muscle. 2. The measurements closely agree with those which are obtained in the exposed heart. 3. The refractory period proves too variable to be used as a comparative measurement, but the full recovery time and premature response interval show a great constancy from one animal to another of the same species. 4. The full recovery time and premature response interval are definitely changed by injection of quinidine or barium, but are undisturbed when the heart is dilated by chloroform. 5. The method allows repeated observations of these measurements to be made upon the same animal.
