Administration of crystalline ketohydroxyœstrin in lactating mice (normal and ovariectomised) inhibits the mammary secretion. The degree of inhibition varies with the dose of hormone and with the method of administration, and, under certain conditions, may rapidly lead to a complete cessation of the mammary secretion. Cessation of œstrin injections is followed by a resumption of full mammary secretion and a rapid rise in the weight of the litter. Vaginal cornification is obtained in ovariectomised lactating animals with doses of œstrin that have little or no effect on the vaginal smear in lactating animals with intact ovaries. The expenses of this investigation have been defrayed by grants from the Medical Research Council and the Royal Society.
