A study of the skeletal muscle from eleven cretin and five normal sheep shows that early thyroidectomy prevents the normal development of sarcoplasm. The ratio of nucleus to cytoplasm remains more nearly like that in the young animal than that in the control twin. No degeneration of the tissue is evident even in a cretin of four and a half years, and all the structures of normal muscle are demonstrable. I wish to acknowledge my indebtedness to Professor S. H. Gage and Dr H. S. Liddell for assistance in this investigation.
