(1) A proteolytic ferment, which is much weaker than pepsin in its action, is invariably present in pyloric extracts. It does not act in a neutral or faintly alkaline medium. The material employed for extracts was in every case free from fundus tissue. (2) Infiltration of pepsin from the fundus accounts for part of the activity observed, especially the increase in activity during digestion, but a secretion of ferment must also be admitted.
