We formulate a notion of a double well Hamiltonian on an abstract measure space, in a way which does not depend upon the approximate degeneracy of the lowest eigenvalue as did our previous analysis of this problem. We show that our definition is stable under the addition of a potential of order unity, and use it to analyse the spectrum of a double well Schrödinger operator in a variable external field.
