(1) There is a very unfortunate slip, p. 363. 1. 2: for | x | ⩾ ½ n −1 R read | x | ⩾ ½ n −½ R . 1. 6: for the third expression read | x | 2 + η R 2 (1+¼η4 n ). A prospective reader should be warned that, except for Lemma 3, and its proof, which may have some interest for function‐theorists, the whole paper is superseded by paper 2. Lemma 3 does not reappear in paper 2, and the slip corrected in (1) occurs in the course of its proof.
