In this paper we study functorial connections between flows and semigroup compactifications of the phase group or semigroup. This machinery provides an approach to the theory of flows from a compact semigroup perspective. It is shown that many standard types of flows can be characterized in a straightforward and useful way by natural restrictions on the minimal ideal of the Ellis or enveloping semigroup of the flow.
