The natural first order Lagrangian is a function defined on pairs of Riemannian manifolds and which is invariant with respect to immersions and depends continuously on 1‐jets of metrics. We prove that there is a canonical bijection between natural first order Lagrangians and functions which are smooth, symmetric and even.
