This tribute to the work of Braj B. Kachru covers three themes. First, I present an overview of Kachru's career and contribution to the field of world Englishes (WE) and language contact. In the second and main section I present an overview of Indian English – Language and culture , a booklet in the Lonely Planet language products series from 1968 (Lonely Planet, 2008). I argue that this popular piece of work is a fitting – if unwitting – tribute to Kachru's work in bringing to life the features of Indian English and related varieties for practical (and even commercial), rather than academic purposes. In the final section I reflect briefly on newer models in WE studies in relation to Kachru's oeuvre.
