The article discusses Larry Smith's contribution to the world Englishes paradigm, represented as his theory of three stages of understanding varieties of English in intercultural communication. The author argues that this pivotal theory is fundamental not only for teaching English as an International Language, but is also applicable to translation studies, where a new type of translation – from one variety to another variety of English – proves to be emerging and needs elaboration due to the intensification of divergence processes in this language.
