This article discusses the late Larry E. Smith's contributions to the study of English for intercultural communication, by illustrating the pioneer nature of his concept of EIL (English as an International Language) as well as its impact on English language education including that of Japan. Smith's EIL paradigm, originally formed from the early 1970s to the early 1980s, was a forerunner to many theories of world Englishes today. It is hoped that this article will help to recognize the enormous significance of the works of this great thinker, scholar, and educator.
