THE IOOTH ANNIVERSARY of the Hainfeld Manifesto of 1889 offered an appropriate occasion to reflect on the challenges facing Austrian socialists in understanding who they are and where they are going. The two articles by prominent Austrian scholars and socialists in "Forum: The Austrian Socialist Party since 1945" offer reflections with reference to the recent historiography of the Austrian Socialist party and the socialist movement. Anton Pelinka's article provides a point of departure for discussing the intellectual problems that a younger historian/political scientist faces in reassessing someone like Karl Renner from the perspective of the 1990s. Helmut Konrad's article discusses efforts of the Austrian Socialist party to locate itself between "classical" Austro-Marxism and a new populism in the 1960s. The editors thank all readers who gave us valuable feedback on volume XXII, the first volume to be edited and produced under the new procedures that were instituted in 1989. We thank referees for their close reading of submitted manuscripts and members of the Advisory Board and the Editorial Board for their continued support and encouragement. Erasmus Meinerts and several members of the Friends of the Immigration History Research Center—Ludmila Alexeev, Winston Chrislock, John Matlon, Theresa Mlekodaj, Hie Motu, Paul Rupprecht, and Vanca Schrunk—gave invaluable assistance on the list of publications and dissertations as language specialists. Mary Byers, Copyediting Manager at the University of Minnesota Press, copyedited the manuscript with exceptional care and thoroughness. The Editors and the Center for Austrian Studies give special thanks to the Austrian Cultural Institute in New York for its generous subsidy of volume XXIII.
