Acute respiratory failure ( ARF ) accompanied by pneumothorax caused by P neumocystis jirovecii pneumonia ( PJP ) is often fatal. We present our experience using extracorporeal membrane oxygenation as treatment for ARF and subsequent pneumothorax caused by PJP in a kidney transplant recipient.
