PTH level of 1661 pg/ml in 1402 parathyroidectomy patients on HD fell to 98 pg/ml at 1 month after surgery; 10% of these 1 month values were >897 pg/ml. Mean serum calcium fell from 9.6 to 7.9 mg/dl at 1 month; 25% of patients had values ≤7.2 pg/ml at 3 months with 17% of the whole group hospitalized for hypocalcemia within 90 days. Mean serum phosphorous fell from 6.8 to 3.8 mg/dl following surgery and was 5.8 mg/dl 1 year later (1).
