Medial arterial calcification can’t be distinguished from atherosclerotic calcification on imaging techniques; breast arterial calcification (BAC) is exclusively medial. BAC on mammography in 202 women with ESRD was common (58%) and did not increase the adjusted risk of coronary artery disease events (5). It did, however, increase the risk of peripheral arterial disease events (odd ratio: 4.6).
