This issue opens with a Profile by Michael Greenberg and Karen Lowrie of George Apostolakis, a long-time thought leader, scholar, teacher, and practitioner in probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) and its applications to nuclear safety. George’s life in risk analysis illustrates well how a mix of hard and soft skills—combining excellent technical work in PRA with excellent judgment about which battles to fight when, and how to collaborate productively instead of fighting—can be most effective in making quantitative risk analysis methods used and useful in high-stakes societal decisionmaking about how and whether risky but beneficial technologies are used and managed successfully.
