The Buddha's hagiography is replete with references to divination. This is particularly the case in the earlier part of his hagiography, before he achieves awakening. This paper will consider some of the episodes in his story that assume divination practices and will argue that his hagiography cannot be fully appreciated without them. Moreover, this paper will argue that divination, in his hagiography, was fully expected to work.
