Anti‐conversion campaigns and laws have been linked to the mainstreaming of Hindu nationalism in the Indian context since the 1990s. Taking account of the historical and legal genealogies of anti‐conversion, this essay makes the case for highlighting how the concern for sovereignty may shed light on how a politics of anti‐conversion is able to thrive. The essay provides a broad survey of academic literature which references these historical and legal genealogies of anti‐conversion and demonstrates how a discussion of sovereignty may contribute to extant debates on the politics of anti‐conversion.
