Considering that the structure of any input‐output table (IOT) or social accounting matrix (SAM) is defined by both row and column coefficients, any updating or adjusting process has to deal with the conflict between both ratios. We present a bi‐objective optimization problem where the objectives are defined in terms of horizontal and vertical coefficients. Our method is applied with different updating criteria and their results are compared. We also apply this method to situations where the updating criteria is not the same for different parts of the SAM.
