(a) Normal hemostasis with normal level of ADAMTS‐13 (a disintegrin and metalloproteinase with a thrombospondin type 1 motif, member 13), which cleaves von Willebrand factor (vWF) into smaller less coagulopathic forms. (b) Thrombocytopenia‐associated multi‐organ failure (TAMOF) with endothelial injury causing platelet activation. Decreased ADAMTS‐13 activity leads to larger more coagulopathic forms of vWF. Together these pathologic changes lead to systemic microthrombi in children with TAMOF.
