Cryosurgery is simply therapeutic tissue destruction, using the application of extreme cold. This article provides an update of the use of cryosurgery in soft tissue oral lesions; we outline the general principles, process of tissue injury, variables affecting the extent of freezing, advantages and side effects. Furthermore, we describe the application protocol of cryosurgery in a clinical environment, and introduce the terminology of cryodose for the literature.
