In 2013, natural and man-made disasters caused US$140 billion in economic loss, according to Swiss Re in its annual survey. Insured damage amounted to US$45 billion. The biggest single cause was massive floods. There were 26,000 disaster deaths (up from, 14,000 in 20 12), mostly in developing nations. Hardest hit was Asia, where insurance penetration is low. Climate change is expected to bring more frequent and severe extreme weather. This is our modern unsustainable risky world.
